UFA funds research for soil remediation

UFA is helping researchers learn new ways to help the environment. The co-operative works together with NAIT, the University of Saskatchewan and Federated Co-op to protect valuable resources and to help make things a little better for future generations. “We began our partnership on a hydrochar project that was completed last year,” says Theresa Keenan, Manager, Environment at UFA. “The latest research project is Lignin research which aims to remediate contaminated soil and/or groundwater in-situ (in the ground) rather than excavating and disposing at another location.  It’s Sustainable Remediation and it’s very exciting!”

UFA’s President and CEO, Scott Bolton, introduced Sustainability as a new focus area for UFA during this year’s Annual General Meeting.

“At UFA, we have been serving our members and customers for over 100 years. We demonstrate sustainable leadership by integrating social, environmental and economic practices into every decision we make so we can be sure we are here for another 100,” stated Bolton.

Keenan adds that as good corporate citizens, UFA has a responsibility to support research like this. “Our co-operative has been around for 112 years, and we play an important part of our province’s history. Our past is one of doing the right thing. It’s important for us to come together in support of this type of research so that 112 years from now, people look back with pride knowing that UFA made a difference.”

UFA provides in-kind resources to help fund the research. For more information on the project and to learn more about soil remediation and ongoing projects, visit here.
