We are very excited to announce sponsorship of the UFA Saturday Farmers’ Market at Exhibition Park in Lethbridge. Our co-operative believes in supporting local producers and giving people in the communities we serve the opportunity to connect with growers and buy local. The UFA Saturday Farmers’ Market also provides the unique opportunity for rural Albertans to bring their products direct to consumers.
In addition to fresh produce, there are many other local products available for purchase including cheese, clothing, jams, artwork, plants, and pies. Speaking of pies, each week the market features one of their local vendors on social media. This week’s “Vendor of the Week” is The Pie Store in Lethbridge. Described by customers as a hidden gem, this specialty store offers a wide selection of fruit and savoury pies.
For owners like Lois and Ken Dyck, the local farmers’ market means so much more than what meets the eye. “We’ve been in business for 22 years and this past year, our business grew substantially,” says Lois. She thinks that the growth can be attributed to a few factors. “Pies are comfort food and during the pandemic, we all sought comfort. As small business owners in the community, your customers are your neighbours. At the farmers’ market you get to know each other, its more than a name, it’s a face and with that comes trust. People are interested in where their food comes from, and now more than ever, it’s important to shop and support local.” She adds for vendors like them, support from community-minded organizations like UFA, is necessary for rural communities to thrive, and they are thankful for the sponsorships which ensure the local farmers’ markets continue to serve the community.
UFA Community Investment Manager, Kimberly MacDonald, says that UFA’s support of the Saturday Farmers’ Market is a shining example of how the co-operative gives back to the communities it serves. “We are happy to be supporting locally owned businesses and producers,” says Kimberly. “The Farmers’ Market truly is a win-win for everyone, not only do customers get access to local products, but they support their neighbours and in essence, the community, in doing so.”
The UFA Saturday Farmers’ Market is open from May 8 - October 9, 2021 in the Exhibition Park UFA South Pavilion entrance from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Exhibition Park organizers have worked closely with Alberta Health Services to develop COVID-19 rules and regulations that keep vendors and customers safe. Visitors are encouraged to shop with purpose and to plan ahead.
